well i got my blurb book in, howeverrrr the pages are all off one. i figured i'd still upload pictures of the actual book since i've done some revisions on my cover and they look more professional. i'll hopefully be returning this book to get one that's actually correct back. if so, i'll update these. but for now, enjoy!

my first typeface. i thought this project was a lot of fun and an awesome experience. i really wish i would have established exactly what direction i was going earlier on that way i could have took it further and have added some elements that i didn't have time for at this point. i am, however, happy with the typeface i've developed - especially since i fought with fontstruct for awhile. when i did finally establish my direction, i found it to be very fitting with my typeface, so i am thankful to have finally found it. i'd explain it here, but that's what the specimen above is for. if i can find the time in the future, i hope to revisit this and enhance it a little more to my liking. for example, i'd like to incorporate some hand drawn patterns in the slides. maybe if i get a wacom for christmas. :]

[na] final gertrude stein revision



my completely new gertrude stein poem - definitely a huge jump from my first project at the beginning of the year. i've finally got a better grasp of after effects to the point where i no longer hate it's guts (if computer programs had guts.....).

but anyways, i'll start off explaining what i was aiming at with this final piece. my goal was to reflect stein's lack of control and freedom of mind through the floating letters and sounds forming words. another way of looking at it is that i was trying to sort of capture her thought process. this explains why the pace goes back and forth from fast to slow - some times thoughts are coming easier, while others require more thought. the blurred letters that are sticking to the background of the screen are meant to symbolize thoughts that are sticking as the poem forms.

if you take a look back at my initial objectives with this project, i'd say i covered them pretty well. comparing this piece to my earlier ones, i've definitely improved with maintaining a consistant look and a better flow. timing is something i really struggled with towards the beginning of learning after effects, and while this piece could still use a bit of improving with that, it's definitely far from where i started. i've also learned with this piece, to try to concentrate on building a story line with a climax (something tyler kept reinforcing) that way it doesn't begin to get boring and easily predictable.

all in all, i'm really glad that i've become more comfortable with this program. i hope to continue exploring possibilities with it and use it more frequently with my projects to come.

[visual language] final OR presentation

in order to assist families in poverty, we’ve decided to form a not-for-profit organization called OR. our organization aims to change lives of those in poverty by encouraging donations from upper-middle class citizens. to promote interest in donating to these families, we’re reaching out to upper-middle class citizens through creative methods using actual design interventions and by making the donation process fast and easy. these methods include giving them a better understanding of what hardships they must live through, such as deciding whether to spend their money on groceries, warm clothes or gas. the presentation above illustrates our ideas and locations for these design interventions.

what i've learned:
i learned a lot within this project just in the poverty simulation alone. it was both interesting and dismal learning the lifestyle of those faced with poverty, and the challenges they must face even in the smallest tasks. because erica and i thought it was so helpful to experience this, we decided to bring this aspect into our project.

the project was a lot different from any other project i've ever done. i learned to look at design as more of a way to encourage help rather than just aesthetically. i learned that it was helpful to look at problems - such as why people usually don't donate - and then look at possible solutions to these problems. i also had to look at design, as well as content, as something that would attract attention from these types of people. this involved the context of the designs too, and how these locations effected the design and the impact of it amongst it's viewers.

three things i would do to improve/expand project:

  • i would like to find even more locations and choices to expand the organization, rather than only having three different channels. perhaps places like restaurants, direct mail, movie theatres, etc.
  • it'd be nice to actually show the actaul website and what information it provides as well as the donation process on there. 
  • as far as improving, i would like to get a more context shots with actual people to better illustrate how people would be interacting with these designs.

[visual language] beginning presentation





this isn't anywhere close to all of our keynote slides, but here's a good idea of the direction were taking with our presentation.

we've also decided to revise our color palette so that all of the designs are more consistant. here's each of our designs in their context shots:

this still has a lot of work to be done to it, but here's the direction i've taken with my developed typeface. first off, i decided to create two parts to my typeface - a filled version and an empty version. while these still hold the same three descriptive words - young, vibrant, spirited - they each have a different side to them. a look through the slides above will explain these differences.

[visual language] final design elements

here's the final outcome of mine and erica's design elements. we decided to display our campaign at three locations - gas stations, grocery stores, and clothing stores. we figured that if our audience was already in the place of context that matches with each "choice", it would be more powerful.

at gas stations, we will have a poster displayed above the pump as well as on the pump handle. in grocery stores, it will be located directly on the shopping cart. in clothing stores, it will be on a fake tshirt ad that is placed on the racks between clothes. we decided to make our campaign literally a design intervention.

after viewers are faced with the choice that those in poverty regularly have to face, they find a statistic about how many people in kansas city are affected by this and how easy/quick it is for them to help. they are then prompted to scan the stylish QR code located on each poster. when scanned, they are lead to a quick donating/learning about poverty process that is shown in the bottom image.

[na] objectives

for project 5, i've decided to improve my first project this semester - the gertrude stein kinetic typography project. my two biggest struggles with this project were being new to after effects and not having a very solid concept. now that after effects and i have established more of a friendship, i've decided to take a different approach at this project with a whole new concept.

new concept: what makes gertrude stein's writing so unique is that she aimed to forget the meaning behind words and decided to rather look at them as sounds. instead, stein tries to write her poems free of thought with less control of the mind and focus more on the rhythmic sounds that the words create together.

with this project, i've decided to try to reflect stein's lack of control and freedom of mind. this may be a challenge at first because my first concept was so closely connected with stein's words. this time i'll have to work to separate myself from the meaning of the words and phrases so that i don't connect their motion to their meaning.

objectives:
  • generate a completely new poem directly reflects my new concept 
  • make the motion graphic more consistant visually and through motion
  • maintain better control over timing and fluid transitions 

[na] history of motion graphics response



before watching this, i never really recognized the difference between motion graphics and animation. i also didn't realize how long motion graphics have been around. i guess it makes sense seeing it at the beginning of older movies and stuff, but it really gets me wondering what types of programs they used and whatnot.

it was interesting seeing how many different types of motion graphics there are today. there's so many things and effects shown in this video that blow me away - such as animating photographs or illustrations. after having experimented with after effects projects myself and seeing how time consuming even the smallest effects are, i can't imagine how much time and effort must be put into motion graphics like these.

although motion graphics are growing on me, i'm not sure if i'd ever be able to focus solely on one project for such a long period of time, especially while maintaining a steady amount of interest. props to those who can!

[na] complete 816 recording logo build




i had a lot of fun with this project. i found that drawing out the storyboards ahead of time actually helped a lot with planning effects and timing. i may consider doing similar storyboards in the future for animation projects.

one of the things i learned with this project was how to illustrate a concept with movement only. usually i'm working in a space where i'm producing the design as well. so this was definitely a different experience being given the design and using movement alone to get your concept across to viewers. i found ways of doing this by thinking of different ways for separate elements to come into view, transitions to other elements, and how/when to maintain movement within those elements (for example the pulsing 816).

another thing i learned was how to control all these movements within a 5-second timeframe. it was important that i was constantly aware of this fact, that way i didn't get too carried away with animations to where it was too busy or overwhelming for the viewer. even keeping this in mind, i still had to simplify it and tone some effects down before my final outcome.

i also had a lot of fun experimenting with the sound clip. i think i actually had a little too much fun with it. i ended up with about 10 to choose from, and it took me forever to narrow them down. i finally narrowed it down to two and then put my animation with each, altering it to fit both. the one i decided on was actually two combined - one with the beat and another one with a magical sort of sound that fit well with the astronomy. with this, i learned that sound plays a very large role, especially when it's only a 5-second clip with a something as simple as a logo being displayed. it was very important for the sound and the animation to fit well together, otherwise it was completely noticeable and distracting. so it took a little while to match up certain sounds with the animations and being sure that the animation would flow with the sound, but it was definitely worth the effort and made for a great learning experience. after getting it to work together, i was happy with the result.

[na] near final


i decided to go with my first test with the 816 pulsing to the beat. i did, however, take the drawing light effect from the other test to draw the wings on rather than having them just fade. i also switched the direction so that it was coming from the logo, looking more like the logo transforming (such as a musician becoming famous would be). i also switched the star rotation at the end so that it doesn't rotate the opposite direction creating too much of a distraction and chaotic look.

i'm having a hard time figuring out if there's too much going on in this. i might find a way to tone a few of the transitions down, such as making the drawing light effect not so bright. i also need to fix the way the wings are drawing on, because the ending curl gets drawn on weird - in a way that it doesn't look flowy and naturally drawn. we'll see what else tyler says regarding how much is going on.

here's what i have so far for my logo build for 816 recording. my idea is to capture the sound to really reinforce that they are a recording studio and what type of music they generally record. i arranged it so that stars would come together to form the logo, as if to signify people not regularly being seen coming together to form a band and shine.

[visual language] poverty exploration





erica and i have started exploring design with our poverty concept. we split up and created our own designs in order to get more variety and more to choose from. i created the logo for "make a choice" capitalizing on the "x" to signify making a choice. i decided to carry this on to the donation screen on our website, too. i also used very bright colors and dominant type to really attract viewers to the ad. 

i had a lot of fun exploring the qr code. i found that you can play with colors and even incorporate your logo within it. i loved this especially because of how much better it can blend with your design.

[visual language] prototypes by buxton notes

i found these notes distinguishing sketches from prototypes pretty helpful. while i knew the main difference between prototyping and sketching depended on where were in the project and that a prototype was more closely related to the final outcome, i didn't completely realize how loose sketches were supposed to be. sometimes i do really loose sketches when first starting, but often i find myself focusing too closely on the minor details or other things that don't come in until later in the process. maybe if i begin to start sketching more loosely and freely rather than focusing on detail and perfection, i can form more ideas in the beginning stages rather than getting stuck in the process.

prototypes, on the other hand, i have found very useful - especially for projects that need mocked-up. since my craft isn't usually the best, the more prototypes, the better the final outcome.

so after the poverty simulation, i was really bothered by the fact that we were often put into situations that we had to decide whether to pay for one thing or another - although both options desperately needed to be payed for. erica and i decided to form our concept around this, by putting the public into the shoes of those in poverty by putting these common decisions in front of them.

we've narrowed it down to three different question categories - clothing, groceries, and transportation. For each, we've started listing possible channels that could be used to trigger the attention of those shopping/getting gas. we've also began exploring questions for each along with names. we'll be working on this more the next day or two, but this is what we have for now. the channels in bold are the one's we're leaning towards.

to sum it up though, our components we'd like to prototypes include:
  • shopping bags - clothing stores
  • weekly ad catalogue/shopping carts - grocery stores

[na] storyboard refined



so i made a few changes to my storyboard. first off, i think i'm going to make the astronomy background have some movement, perhaps by rotating it slowly? i've also decided to have the decorative elements to be drawn on from the 816 recording to better represent it becoming a flashier, more striking image. hopefully this will illustrate that idea a little better, but we'll find out when i get into animating it.

[na] 10-panel storyboard




so for my logo build, i've decided to go with julie's 816 recording logo. her tagline is "you're piece of the sky' and the logo sits on top of an astronomical background. i think i'm going to start with these stars slowly coming together to form the logo - to sort of allude to musicians first being unseen and being brought together, or to the studio, to be seen. once this logo forms, the decorative elements will come out of the 816 to represent the musician becoming more popular and transformed into a bigger image. turning into a  a star will then shoot across the bottom to reveal, "you're piece of the sky".

[type 3] typeface inspiration








i've found my self especially drawn to thin, sans-serif fonts that are generally a little wider in width. i'm also considering making either a top-heavy or bottom-heavy font, where the middle of the letters either sinks or is set up higher (such as in my first two examples). i really like how interesting the last example is with the thin strokes are combined with thick, round shapes.

[visual language] communication model progress




so here's what erica and i developed for our final communication model. we incorporated a lot of her information into my model. we decided to multiply the horizontal one and overlap it with a vertical one in order to incorporate group communication as well. rather than locating the channel right on the origin, we decided to turn the gray line into the channel, since that's what the messages and feedback are traveling through. the channel is also now divided into four lines to represent four different channels - tv, internet, phone, and print.

typography 3 // final koenig book







in my koenig book, i'm focusing primarily on the text interacting with the images to create more abstract forms that represent koenig's architecture. to reinforce these shapes along with my grid, i've incorporated a thin dashed line outlining the text frames and images. by having the pictures interrupted by white blocks with text, the pictures take a more interesting form that relate better to the architecture. this method also plays well off of my grid and how i made good use of these. i really enjoyed using a grid and realizing how aligned and organized everything becomes. i used bright, modern colors to showcase the energy he puts into his architecture and their style. i decided to leave the front very clean and white to contrast with the inside, and also to represent the organization and structure of koenig's work. 

we'll be ordering these books in mid-november, so when i get it in i'll totally put up some legit portfolio pictures.

visual language // communication models




so for my first shot at communication models, i think i concentrated too much on the design aspect of it and not enough on the content. i had the basics of the model, but i didn't get quite specific enough. i do think my models had a nice, unique form though - especially the flow of the first two.

erika d. and i got partnered together and luckily, her models concentrated more on the content than the styles; so with the two of us put together, we've got a good start. we decided to stick with the first one of my models because of the flow and how the message and feedback are intertwined and are both effected by the channel and noise. we started to incorporate a lot of her detail and ended up with the below model we still have quite a bit of finessing and figuring out to do, but we've got a good start.

na // imaginary forces presentation

for narrative sound and motion we were to present a visual presentation focusing on a animation studio we were assigned. i as assigned a popular creative studio and production company located in LA and NYC - imaginary forces. i found that they composed several things that i recognized and that they have a very broad range of work. they've been around since 1996, so their collection is quite large. here's the keynote presentation i created.

i actually had a lot of fun with this project. not only do i love messing around with package design, but it was really neat learning about the modes of appeal. i now catch myself at stores pointing out certain mode of appeals in all kinds of products. i especially liked the idea of switching modes of appeal on our products, because it definitely set them apart from competitors. as seen in the image with my product on the shelf, it has a very notable contrast from the rest of the products.

altering this product was enjoyable for me all around. i enjoyed messing around with type, colors, infographics and illustration. it's a totally different experience designing something on a 3-D space. it's almost even more of a challenge because i had to be sure that the product had a unified look and concept, rather than each side looking like a separate space.

i felt a great sense of accomplishment after getting my product printed out and mocked-up, even in the earlier stages. it's really neat seeing your work look like an actual product, especially with a little more emphasis on interesting design.

typography 3 // koenig process





so my koenig concept has taken a rather sharp turn in direction. after talking with kidwell, i've eliminated a lot of the elements i had before and instead i'm focusing primarily on the text interacting with the images to create more abstract forms that represent koenig's architecture. to reinforce these shapes along with my grid, i've incorporated a thin dashed line outlining the text frames and images. it's still a work in progress, but i'm feeling a lot clearer about what direction i'm heading. smiley face.
